Christmas Gifts From Avon 2020

Christmas Gifts From Avon 2020

I honestly needed to write a Christmas blog post. I mean, after all, we have a Black Friday Sale going on through the 27th. There shouldn’t be any reason why I haven’t written this earlier. I had noticed more looksies at my Mother’s Day Guide. Which when that day comes around I will need to update. Today, I am in one of the happiest moods. I feel like taking on a lot. Such as, suddenly getting this idea to do a Countdown to Christmas daily event for my Facebook page. I didn’t plan on doing it, it just came to me. Then, I told myself, Ashley, you need to do a Christmas Gift Guide. I will list 10 Items plus mention a few bundles well worth getting and adding to that list.

2020 has been a year for the books. And while online shopping has been around for a long while, sales are sure to surge this year due to the “virus that shall not be named”. Many will still attempt to go shop in person and that’s fine too. I can’t tell anyone not to. Just to emphasize how much shopping is being done online this year, USA Today reported that between the start of November until the end of the year that sales are expected to grow between 3.6-5.2%. It doesn’t sound like a lot but trust me, it is. Major delivery chains like UPS are still hiring. I just hope the men and women delivery packages can keep up.

Avon has something for most anyone. We still have bundles and those ever so cute fragrance bundles that, each year, have a new box look. There’s always cute chapstick with Christmas figures on them and hand lotions with a similar appearance. Now, our main Christmas theme is Paris. But you can make it any way you want. Discover 15 Reasons Why I Love Veilment’s Exfoliating Soap

Discover 15 Reasons Why I Love Veilment’s Exfoliating Soap

If you had asked me a few years ago if I exfoliated when I showered, I would have given you a questioning look. At the time I just used a good soap and a wash-cloth to get clean. Fast forward a few years later I began reading about exfoliating before you shave your legs. Then I read about body brushes. Now, body brushes, outside of their said use to help, “increases circulation and blood flow, and stimulates drainage from the lymphatic system to smooth skin’s surface” (- via Good Housekeeping, PS. I love your magazine!) I figured were a good use to help with dry skin and patches. My daughter gets a build-up around her chest and honestly, if it isn’t kept up it looks like a thin layer of dirt. It is mainly what I use body brushes for. I mentioned in my +Balance post that the majority of my dry skin is on my shins. It’s not horrible. But it is there. And if I were to shower, as I have done today, I can promise you that I can gently brush off a load of excess dead skin cells. Enough to be noticeable on the tile. I know. Ew. Gross. I didn’t notice how much I shed via my shins until a few years ago when I lived in a community building. Sort of like a modern-day, less hippy version of a commune if you want to describe it as such. I only lived there for two years. Either way, it was then that I noticed how much I am now shedding. I honestly don’t think I shed as much as a child. Turns out some of us do shed more skin and hair than others (thanks forensic scientists). I know that many things can play into this and much of it being hormones. there was a time I was losing a lot of hair after having kids. What does all of that mean to skincare? Exfoliation.

Since learning about the benefits of exfoliating I now do it each time I shower. I have found myself less itchy and when I do use tanning products, my tan isn’t patchy. My shave is cleaner. My body acne less prevalent and my makeup more even on my face. I use loofas of various sorts. I may not have a body brush but would love to have one just to see what the hoopla is about.

History of Exfoliation in Brief

Scrubbing and exfoliating are not as new as some may think. In fact, the loofa is roughly 10,000 years old. And here is something I didn’t know but learned while reading the University of Wisconsin Student Newspaper, The Spectator, the loofa isn’t the same as some sponges. It doesn’t come from the sea. It is a vegetable that is related to the squash family. Does this mean I can count it in my daily 10? I would like to think so. But I am sure it isn’t counted. In any case, it is used to remove dead skin cells that don’t slough off as easily. I think I will need to find How It’s Made and see if they have a video on loofas to satisfy my nerdy side.

It is safe to say that exfoliating has been around for a while. There are a ton of exfoliating products out there. Liquid exfoliating washes, loofas, body brushes, exfoliating gels, and so on. Not everything works wonders and not everything works for everyone. But given the fact that we are more and more, as people, asking for natural products and products which are essentially products of the time. Heralded as wonder ingredients, it is without much surprise that we (and Avon) have a bamboo-charcoal exfoliating soap bar. Veilment Natural Spa has made two exfoliating body bars and I chose the charcoal one since maybe, two years back I had a sudden reaction to my perfume and broke ou tin hives. Along with calamine lotion, I used a charcoal soap bar that was given to me. I would give the name of the company that made it but it was simply wrapped in plastic wrap and didn’t have the name of the soap or the company on it. But it worked so well in pulling out whatever was in my perfume that irritated my skin. The hives lasted for maybe three days and lessened each day. It didn’t take me long to want to buy this new soap and see how it worked.

I really couldn’t get rid of the box. I think it’s kind of nice as a shelf element. I know it sounds silly but it seems to add to how my bathroom shelf looks.

About Charcoal and a bit About Bamboo

Veilment Natural Spa Bamboo Charcoal Exfoliating Soap has charcoal in it, which gives it it’s grey color and little bits of bamboo throughout it that create the tiny scrubbers that help to scrub off the dead skin cells. Still, there is more to a product than what most are drawn to. While it’s fine to be drawn to certain scents and brands because they are advertised to sell, it’s also good to know what’s in a product. Given what we outwardly know about this product with the words “charcoal” and “bamboo”, as they are very popular right now, getting to know how they work is most important.

I looked up when charcoal was brought into everyday products that we use. And as far as I can tell, we have been using it since approximately 500 ce. That is a long time. And it was used for ingesting in the 1800s as far as documentation can tell. Charcoal is used to draw out dirt and oil and other nasties that we don’t want in our skin. It makes sense how I saw an immediate improvement when it came to the hives I had encountered. It was taking out the irritants that had caused them. Not to say that this would work every time for everyone. I had also consulted a doctor and used calamine lotion to help with the itching. What I didn’t know was that in some cases charcoal can be used on infected wounds. I’ve never tried this, so I can’t say if the soap would do the same.

As mentioned the bamboo is there for exfoliating purposes. Most of the time you find bamboo products in the form of a body brush. But in this case, it’s basically ground-up bamboo in soap. I enjoy the benefits of this soap and it has lasted me a while. Since currently, I am the only one that is using it. 🙂

As you can tell, I’ve used it. The little imprint of the brand name is long gone and on one side there are little circle of where bubbles were when I last used it.

Veilment has a great line of other products that I highly recommend. So far the charcoal bath bar is my favorite. Though I also like the Veilment Natural Spa Black Rose Body Essence.

15 Reasons Why I love Veilment Scrubbing Soap Bars

  1. It doesn’t harbor bacteria like loofahs (that doesn’t mean it’s good to share it)
  2. It cleanses my skin
  3. It helps remove dead skin cells
  4. My skin hasn’t been as itchy and dry
  5. Great for before applying any skin care product because it is more evenly applied and absorbed better
  6. It is eco-friendly (liquid soap isn’t as friendly but if if prefer it, that’s fine)
  7. It doesn’t have a strong smell (which I like)
  8. My skin doesn’t look dry
  9. Good for when I need to shave those legs
  10. It hasn’t altered my skins natural oils as far as I can tell
  11. Less Preservative
  12. Lasts a long time (I have had had a LOT of showers since buying it a few months ago)
  13. Travel friendly (how many times had that little container of liquid soap come out due to cabin pressure in your travel bag even when you wrapped it in plastic?)
  14. Minus the fact this particular soap bar is new to us, it’s part of a long history of soap bar use!
  15. The little bits of bamboo aren’t harmful to the environment like those tiny little plastic microbeads. There is enough plastic in the ocean.

I Belif in Skin: 7 Yummy Hydrating Products from Avon

I Belif in Skin: 7 Yummy Hydrating Products from Avon

Drink water, stay hydrated. Feeling just a tad thirsty, get hydrated. Urine, not the right color, get hydrated. Always drinking soda? You need more water. Water, water, water. It has always been a bit of a mantra to stay hydrated no matter what time of the year. Water is one of the many elements that keep life going. There is no exact measurement of how much we need, sure you hear 8 glasses a day but that it a general requirement. enough for most individuals to stay functioning. Water is good for making sure excess water-soluble vitamins are flushed out of the body. It helps the kidneys detox the body. It has such a vast amount of benefit I can say I am shocked it isn’t consumed more. Yet, in our modern societies promote other fluids like soda, milk (not all bad but some consume too much), sugary juices not made of any real juice from fruits, and other drinks that while nice to have for a change of pace, have no long term benefits. The short term always being satisfaction of cravings we are essentially addicted to thanks to processed anything. Other benefits of water are:

  • Lubricated joints
  • helps the saliva form well enough so we can predigest and chew food (you have heard of dry mouth problems)
  • delivers oxygen to the body, it says it in its elemental name hydrogen-dioxide, since our bodies are 60% water and blood 90% water
  • is the lubrication for neuro functions of the brain spinal cord and other parts of the body that wouldn’t be able to function if they were dry (best word for that, and it reminds me of a story involving family having repeat visits to the ER because they simply didn’t drink enough water. One seemed to have issues with speaking as dehydration can affect brain function)
  • Helps with blood pressure. This is why people get hooked up to bags with clear fluids. It isn’t just water in there either.
  • It is good for the airways. Have asthma? You may benefit from making sure you have water every day.
  • Helps the skin stay clear and problem-free. Not enough water can lead to dull skin. Dull skin, wrinkles, enlarged or more prominent looking pores are signs of not enough water. This is our focus in this post. Skin.

So, now you know that water is good for the inside and I have explained a bit of why it is good for the outside. The skin is an organ of the body. It sure receives a lot of grief from our every day being and you wouldn’t think we cared for it as much as we should given the issues we have on a day-to-day basis. I blame part of that on modern conveniences of man-made products like soda. Your skin is 64% water of the water your body is made of. Now, there is more to skin health than just drinking water. Yes, it helps a tremendous amount. It has been noted to clear acne for some. It’s 50/50 for me. It helps but I also have to buff my skin to rid of the dead skin cells that are also an issue in clogging my pores. Still, there is more you can do. And that is to know that skincare products can help with all this in combination with drinking water and keeping clean with a good shower or bath. Whichever you prefer.

Wait, there are a ton of products on the market for skincare! There is a lot to choose from. And much of the time we may not be using the product that is best suited for our needs. No two persons are alike in skin needs. As there is a slew of skin issues. Excema, dermatitis, rosacea, sensitive skin, overly dry skin, extremely oily skin, combination skin, and the list goes on. Knowing which products are best for you takes a bit of research and a lot of reading about products and listening to experts. There have been times I have spent hours just reading lists and looking at ingredients. All of my skin is weird. I have combination oily skin on my face. Back acne that I have to use a strong and not irritating wash for and even then I may only get 60% of it cleared up at any given time. I have dry shins as well.

Why is hydration a thing anyway? Well, besides the medical side of it, it is a long historical facet of human existence. We have pampered our skin since olden times and we aren’t likely to change taking care of our most prominent organ that is seen daily. Because as Bart Simpson would say, “Your epidermis is showing.”

Why Skin Care?

Water evaporates. As it always has. It evaporates from tables where a cup was set leaving a ring that so many housekeepers (men and women) have groaned at the sight of since goodness knows when. It evaporates from the floor after mopping. From the ground after a good rain shower or from our car when it is washed. So it evaporates from our skin even when we aren’t getting out of the shower or pool. a barrier against pathogens, dirt, or damage, while protecting itself from drying out and becoming brittle and rigid. The ability to retain moisture depends on the lipid bilayer between the corneocytes. In Avon we have had a few discussions about our skins layers and a few representatives are fascinated in knowing there is such a thing as a microbiome. Using creams that help keep the skin moisturized and from drying out can help water from evaporating by varying degrees but generally, 50-75% granted you are using the right product. It wasn’t until the 1920’s that more science behind creams and lotions for the skin began. Of course, you don’t want to overuse. There are times I may skip a cream or lotion such as when my hormones are prepping for that ever so fun time of the month and I get a few breakouts. At which point I simply prefer to wash my face twice a day and maybe use a toner. and scrub. Otherwise, the creams and lotions only make my acne worse, and the oil production more so because my skin says it wants to do its job. Also, you need to know if your skin has a reaction to anything and avoid products and ingredients that will harm more than help. Since water alone is only temporary, it’s why other ingredients are added to keep the water used, in.

I belif in Skin

I would like to focus on a select line of products from Avon. Belif came out not long ago and started with two lotions called aqua bombs. Meaning that it adds a burst of hydration to the skin. One add’s up to 70% more moisture in an hour and the other gives you 26 hours of hydration. Both can be used a bit like a mask as well. You put a thin layer on, let it sit and then gently wipe some off. Not all, but some. It adds a boost of hydration for those who need it most.

Let’s get down to the products.

belif True Cream Aqua Bomb

belif True Cream Aqua Bomb

This is the product that offers 70% more hydration. It is lightweight and is a water-based gel-cream with a key ingredient of Lady’s Mantle. Lady’s Mantle has been used since the Middles Ages for stomach issued. Yeah, I know. A very different use than for the skin. It in addition to tea and a few other ingredients were used in baths to helps irritated skin. Basically used as an astringent with a high tannin that, according to verilymag.com, “fight against bacterial infections (i.e., acne) and also act as an antioxidant against free radicals that cause cell damage.” You can find it in Witch Hazel. One of my favorite products for acne treatment, thanks to my brother for telling me about Witch Hazel when I was 15 and suffering acne. I use it to this day. Lady’s Mantle helps to minimize the appearance of pores. I use this product for my T-zome area of my face. It’s drier there but the product is good for oily skinned people as well. I like having a smoother feeling nose and it helps it to not look flaky.

BENEFITS
• Instantly cools skin
• Lightweight formula
• Free from mineral oils
• Keeps skin looking smooth, healthy and supple
• Dermatologist-tested
• No parabens, sulfates or phthalates
• Clinically proven to increase skin’s hydration levels by 70%

You can also use it as a primer for your makeup.

belif The True Cream Moisturizing Bomb

belif True Cream Moisturizing Bomb

Now, I admit that both the names and the appearance of either one of the True Cream Bombs get me a bit confused and I do wish Avon would make one a slightly different color so as to be a bit easier to differentiate. Nonetheless, this moisturizer keeps your skin moisturized for 26 hours after application but also can be used as a 10-minute face mask that you can wipe off a bit off to add extra moisture when needed. It’s key ingredient, different from Lady’s Mantle, is Comfrey Leaf. When used by itself it is good for wounds and sprains. Just like Lady’s it was also originally used for stomach issues. I think I am seeing a connection here. Only it did more harm than good. So as the story goes in early apothecary. Since at particular amounts, I would not suggest it be used on broken skin. Please don’t. It can be dangerous. And honestly, I don’t think it is good to use products on broken skin, to begin with, that aren’t meant for healing like what is found in antibiotic ointment. Avon’s products only use just the right amount to help skin, roughly 5% from what I can tell.

BENEFITS
• No parabens, sulfates or phthalates
• Free from mineral oils
• Clinically proven to provide the skin with 26 hours of intense hydration
• Leaves skin feeling smooth, supple and nourished
• Helps improve elasticity
• Helps hydrate and detoxify skin
• Lightweight, whipped, cushiony cream

Good for normal, dry, and sensitive skin.

Belif Aqua Bomb Jelly Cleanser

As of late, this, along with Veilment Natural Spa Black Rose Body Scrub and Cleanser, is one of my favorite products! I first tried it when I got the travel pack of belief products in a cute water droplet-shaped carrier. Formulated with amino acids and glycerin-based cleansing agents, it gently removes makeup and impurities without stripping skin of moisture. Great for all skin types. My face felt nice after using it. It was cooled off. Clean. Didn’t feel too dry like how body bar soap does when you use it (you aren’t supposed to but sometimes when you have nothing else. . .) and my face felt light. Clean. What I like most is that I only have to use it twice a day. In the morning and before bed. I can’t stand being awake with icky skin, nor can I stand going to bed with skin not clean from the day’s occurrences. I feel gross both ways. Just as with the Aqua bomb, it’s key ingredient is Lady’s Mantle. No introduction or explanation needed here.

BENEFITS
• Jelly-to-foam cleanser
• Same explosive burst of hydration as True Cream Aqua Bomb
• Amino acids and glycerin-based cleansing agents
• Gently remove makeup and impurities without stripping skin of moisture
• Ideal for dry and uneven skin (though I have combo-oily skin and had wonderful results)
• Paraben and sulfate-free
• 97% of women felt it was gentle when cleansing based on a consumer perception study

Belif Moisturizing Eye Bomb

I use this as well. I know I am only 38 (eek 40 right around the corner!) but I do get dark circles under my eyes. This adds moisture and my eyes look happier and with the added moisture my eyes look more supple. If that is a decent word to use for the under-eye area. Not puffy like when I have been crying a river over a movie that made my heartstrings break. But supple. This lightweight, refreshing eye cream cools on contact and helps keep the eye area resilient and smooth for crease-free makeup application. Great for dryness around eyes. Though, as said, I only have dry skin in the T-Zone area of my face. I have no idea what it is like to have dry under eyes but it sounds uncomfortable.

The key ingredient for this wonderful product is Pennywort (Tiger Grass). It is a Korean swamp-dwelling herb. It isn’t just for Korean beauty products. Estee Lauder has also been known to use this ingredient as well. paulaschoice.com gave me some interesting information about the benefits of this ingredient. It has, “active compounds, including madecassoside, which serves as an antioxidant. Centella asiatica itself also has been shown to have potent antioxidant properties and to be a rich source of amino acids, and there’s additional research showing that it’s a good hydrating ingredient to soothe upset or compromised skin.” It seems to also help with sun damage. There are a few people I would suggest this too as they do have sun damage. For me, I liked how it helped my dark circles.

BENEFITS
• Cools on contact
• Helps keep eye area resilient and smooth
• Good for dryness, fine lines and wrinkles
• Provides eye area with 26 hours of moisture based on a clinical study
• Free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic dyes and fragrances

We also have a few other products that I have not yet tried out but I will mention them because they sound wonderful and shouldn’t be bypassed.

belif x VDL Aqua Bomb Glow Water Cream

belif x VDL Aqua Bomb Glow water Cream

Prepping the skin for makeup is a must. You have the wash and serums and a few other steps. This you use after serum and moisturizer and follow with SPF. belif and VDL (another line I looooove) come together to make more great product babies. It preps your face with moisture and hydration. It is easily absorbed into the skin with its creamy texture and has crushed pearl to add a reflective glow just as with some primers we have. Visibly evens skin tone and is free from mineral oils, fragrances, and dyes being that is is water-based and vegan. Has Lady’s Mantle.

belif x VDL Glow Moist Fix & Mist

belif x VDL Glow Moist Fix and Mist

Makeup isn’t ready until you use a setting spray. I am still using the Avon True Color Setting Spray. I haven’t run out just yet but still plan on buying this. I have this weird comfort of how setting spray feels with it is misting on my face. It’s like a tiny sprinkler and I love that feeling. This 2-in-1 spray both primes and sets the makeup. It is non-greasy and non-sticky and dries quick. Great for those with oily skin (hey you have my attention) and who want to control their T-Zone. Just like with the water cream it is free from mineral oils, fragrances, and dyes.

belif X VDL Glow Moist Primer

Not that I meant to put this after the setting spray, it just happened as I was writing down the list in my notebook, you do need a primer. Used after the water cream or by its self. Makeup will be griped on and better-staying power when you use this especially if you have oily skin. I do have a small issue with makeup still coming off just a tiny bit even when I use a primer. Just a smidge. Free from mineral oils, fragrances, dyes, is water-based and vegan.
