The Chi founder Farouk Shami, a hairdresser, wanted it to be his mission to create healthier and safer hair products (as well as a work environment) for everyone.
As of late, we are having to practice healthier and safer environments during the pandemic by practicing self-distancing. It throws off the balance we may have had before. Let us discuss finding balance during uncertain times through hairstyling.
When I first heard of the company Chi, I immediately thought of the traditional concept of Qi. Which is a Chinese term of philosophy for “vital life force.” It is what binds all things in life. Being everything and nothing. I thought of Tai Chi that people do in the park, or so I have seen, and in the movie The Karate Kid (both the new and original). A form of martial art. I want to look at the philosophical aspect of qi. That way we can look at how it is a concept of the company brand and why it is a way to add life back into your hair using Chi hair styling tools now out through Avon.
A Little About Qi
Beyond having to maintain the health of our hair to give us reason to look our best with the Chi products I have written about consisting of shampoo, conditioner, serum, and heat protectant as well as the new hair dye line, it may be that your hair needs more life to it. I, for one, have very fine hair that can quickly go limp and cannot keep a curl though I have tried with regular styling tools. May I now look at my none Chi curling brush with disdain at its lack of ability to do what I would like on my hair without needing to use hair curling aids such as special shampoos. Remember Wash and Curl shampoo? Yeah. I used to use that on the regular when my hair wasn’t permed. It was the only way, besides heavy use of super-strong hair spray that is not good for the overall health of very-fine hair, I could keep a curl longer than 30 minutes. Not to say that curls are the only way to add life to hair but also hair straighteners and handheld hair dryers. Heating tools are often used to add life to our hair.
Qi deficiency is when something is off balance. It could be any number or combination of things. Inadequate sleep, not enough water intake, tainted water, poor nutrition, too much of a particular nutrient (least we forget that this is also not healthy), air pollution, mental and emotional un-wellness. The list goes on. If you are wondering what that has to do with hair, well healthy hair and healthy-looking hair add to our overall appearance and look of health. It’s isn’t enough to want to look handsome or pretty, but to look healthy. Hair can give us a glow. Maintaining our qi (Chi) in as many areas as possible, hair included, will help us look and feel our best. I don’t mean you have to do it every day. However, doing it when you need to (for work, for example) or when you need a pick me up (hello Coronavirus stay-at-home orders that are driving us up the wall with cabin fever) or are tired of the same old look can aid in balancing out the off days. Or when you can chill with friends in a messy bun and sweatshirt binge-watching your favorite shows.
I recall a very hard time in my life when I felt as if I would be in that same position day in and day out for the rest of my life. When I began to do my makeup and my hair and picking out an outfit to compliment all that, I felt better. I wasn’t looking to impress but simply to feel better and that I had at least some control over my life’s direction at the time. I easily suffered anxiety attacks and got depressed often. I, for some reason or another, decided I wanted to learn more about doing makeup and taking care of my hair and knowing what to wear and what it meant to wear that particular outfit. Doing all that balanced out the negative in my life. Granted, it wasn’t always easy, but it helped. Many would say it sounds vain. To be honest, I don’t always do it. There are times I feel content sitting in my sweats with a messy bun drinking coffee. Binge-watching many shows until I think I have had enough and maybe read a book.
Avon’s New Hair Styling Tools
Fast forward to now when Avon rolled out a new line of hair styling tools to go along with their other Chi products. As you know, Avon and Chi partnered up last year, as I mentioned in my hair dye review. I got a bit excited about the new hair styling tools. A hairdryer with attachments, a hair curler, and a flatiron. Let’s look at the curling iron first.
The Chi Lava Spin and Curl
Made of volcanic lava ceramic material that has minerals in it that distribute heat evenly and doesn’t stick to your hair. It has several features worth looking at. Such as:
- 1” Volcanic Lava Ceramic rotating barrel creates bouncy curls and waves
- Maximum temperature of up to 410°F/210°C
- Includes pre-set temperature settings with adjustable heat-up times and display
- Pre-Set Temperatures:
- – Low 370°F / 188°C – Fine Hair
- – Medium 390°F / 199°C – Medium Hair
- – High 410°F / 210°C – Coarse Hair
- Adjustable Heat -Up Times (Timer Settings):
- – 15 seconds – Fine Hair
- – 17 seconds – Medium Hair
- – 19 seconds – Coarse Hair
- Curl chamber surrounded by a protective heat barrier for safe usage
- Directional buttons with tangle protection
- Temperature display with auto-lock
- 11 ft. (3.35m) swivel cord
- 1-hour auto shut-off
- Dual voltage
It also beeps when it is done curling, which is a nice feature to have if you aren’t sure how long to curl for. An excellent way to know that you won’t somehow singe the hair. In addition to knowing when your curls are set, it also has an alarm to let you know if your hair might get tangled. A fear for many fine hair girls or any of girl.
CHI 1″ Tourmaline Ceramic Hairstyling Iron – Black Matte
This is the product that I have used. I have used crimping irons back in the day but not flatirons. It worked great on both my hair and my daughter’s hair. Read about it here. I will quote the description of the tool as I don’t think I could say it any other way. “CHI 1″ Tourmaline Ceramic Hairstyling Iron utilizes the latest innovative technology combining Tourmaline Ceramic with even heat distribution, producing an exceptionally high amount of negative ions and Far Infrared which reducestatic electricity for that perfect style. Hair is left smooth and silky with an exceptional shine. This hairstyling iron is ideal for all your hairstyle needs. Now you can straighten, smooth, curl, wave, spiral, flip, and bend. Just use your imagination and create your own personal flair.” I really do love how this product worked, and it is now the most expensive hair styling tool I own. Now on to the features of the ceramic flatiron.
- 1” Curved Floating Plates
- 392°F(202°C) Maximum Temperature
- 30-second Quick Heat Up
- 9 ft Swivel Cord
- Dual Voltage
- 2-Year Limited Warranty
- Reduces Frizz & Static
- Adds Exceptional Shine
- Versatile Styling: Smooth, Curl and Flip
Not to forget that this tool also shuts off after an hour of none use. It locks moisture into the hair and seals cuticles as well. The temperatures are set to suit your hair type. Look to curling wand above for info related to that.
CHI Advanced Ionic Compact Hair Dryer
Many women blow dry their hair to get their hairdryer faster and to help set hairstyles. It gives hair volume as well. Something I look for in a hairdryer. The way this one works is by emitting negative ions that reduce frizz and shine. Who doesn’t have to deal with frizz and flyaways when they have done drying their hair? I tend to have to gently use a serum just to manage that. I want volume, not frizz. It has microbial properties that keep the air that circulates through the dryer cleaner when it hits your hair and also reduces buildup in the dryer using blue LED lights. Something new, I learned to be a “thing.” It comes with a few attachments. That helps concentrate and diffuse. Other features are:
- 1875 Watts
- CHI Ceramic Technology locks in moisture and maintains body
- Ion Generator reduces frizz and minimizes fly-a-ways
- Adjustable 3 Heat / 2 Speed Settings
- Cold Shot Button locks in curls, waves, and styles
- Lightweight and Powerful DC motor
- Air Nozzle Concentrator and Diffuser included
- Super Compact, space-saver design.
- The removable filter prevents damaging lint buildup and extends motor life
- 6.5 ft. (1.9 m) cord for convenience
- designed for all hair types
To accompany the new products, we have BioSilk Silk Therapy, which, along with the hair protectant, can help keep curls longer.
BioSilk Silk Therapy
A weightless protein product that adds for strength, elasticity, shine, and moisture to hair while reducing frizz and fly-aways.
Silk protein… The natural wonder for hair because:
• Strength – One of the most durable fibers in the world, silk contains 17 of the 19 amino acids found in hair; it bonds and builds hair from the inside out.
• Moisture – Holds up to 2.5-3X its weight in moisture, to improve elasticity.
• Shine – Provides unparalleled shine due to its triangular molecular structure.
• Protection – Helps shield hair from UV rays, heat, humidity, and other environmental stressors.
Shake well before use. Place a small amount of Silk Therapy in the palms and apply from the scalp to the ends. May be used on wet or dry hair or skin. Use as often as necessary.
My Styles with the Flatiron
Though I have written a review of the Styling Iron, I still want to show you pictures anyway. This is my and my daughter’s hair. I did hers by wrapping the hair around a pencil and using the iron to create tight curls. She loved it. For me, I simply wrapped my hair around the iron, waited about 5 seconds and slowly brought it down to the ends creating big curls. I loved it. It gave my hair more volume which I am always up for. Still, check out my review here. Now these items will be out as of tomorrow April 14, 2020.
With being stuck at home a lot right now, you few chances to walk outside stylish. People dress-up in Australia right now to take our garbage just to add joy to the day of not being able to go much of anywhere. Or, if you are one of the essential workers that can do up their hair, these new tools are a great way to add life to your hair that stays and doesn’t let the hair loose its style, my daughter’s curls stayed in for two days even with brushing and no hair spray. Do it for that video call you have. Keep a healthy balance of lounge days and days where you want to feel like there is still something to try out. Have a virtual girls night in through Facetime or another video chat platform, and you all can do your hair. Kind of like a “get ready with me.” Stay safe and add some life to your look while you’re at it.
I have a video that shows more of how I used the styling iron on my daughter. Forgive me for having a shaking camera in it. I had the luxury of accidentally deleting that scene and having to redo some of it. And since setting up can take a few minutes, my adorable son wanted to help out. You will find great ideas for Mother’s Day, May 20th, in it as well.
