Do a Little Something More This Holiday Season by Providing Food

Avon has long since been a company that strives to make lives better through fighting breast cancer, promoting women’s entrepreneurship, speaking out against domestic violence, and voicing women’s equality. This year Avon took it another step and provided food to those in need during COVID-19. Particularly for children, who often face hunger when money is tight. Already Avon has donated $2 million+ to Feed the Children. Each dollar will go towards giving food to someone who could really use it. I know that it is the time of year where you see all sorts of charities. It’s the time for giving. You can do it all year round but it’s during the holidays in particular that most find it hard to get a meal in. I have met people who had children that were in need of food. I have helped donate food to shelters and bagged lunches for other school kids. I have left a small amount of food and a drink to a young man I found sleeping in a spot away from the eyes of my store’s camera. I didn’t bother to wake him or tell anyone about it. I could tell he had been without a home for a while. So, in the midst of being overrun with ads and flyers and bell ringers, remember that many companies, like Avon, are helping to raise awareness. Because though 2020 has been a year for the books, helping someone out, no matter what time of year, is a huge gift anyone can give.

I won’t go too deep into my personal knowledge of how I am well acquainted with children needing food. But I will say that there is a strong stigma about feeding those in need. I’ve seen people make the worst comments. Some I won’t repeat here but let me give it to you honestly. Things happen. even when a person tries their best to prevent it, things happen. Kids do find themselves in the middle. And they have no control over that. Many have parents that have fallen on hard times. Many have parents doing their best and one thing after another pile up, making it even more difficult to know that there will be food for dinner or breakfast or lunch that day or the next. 2020 is no exception and for some, it’s something they may have never experienced until this year. Kids shouldn’t have to worry about when they get to eat or if they have to skip a meal. Granted, this happens a lot in other countries. I am not saying who has it worse. Only that it’s a global ordeal. Let’s not argue about who comes first. It’s not a competition. Simply helping a child or their family eat is what counts.

When I was younger, I bagged lunches for other kids my age at my school. I lived in California and I enjoyed bagging and counting lunches. I don’t recall how many lunches we bagged that year. I do have a yearbook but I would have to find it to see how many we did. I do recall it being mentioned though. But I lived in Bakersfield, California. I am not sure if they still do the program where kids help bag lunches for other kids. But I enjoyed doing it. I did it during my math class. I think we had several times where we did it and all the kids pitched in. We sometimes would meet in the cafeteria and the tables would be lined with bags. No names on them. Just bags. We would put apples and sandwiches and juice boxes in the bags. I think other things like fruit roll-ups but I can’t recall. It was over 20 years ago. It was my first experience in giving back to the community I lived in and I won’t forget doing that. I will never think that it didn’t matter. Because at one point in my life, I needed help to make sure my kids had food when times got tough. So, I appreciate all the effort people in these organizations put into helping feed kids.

About Feed the Children

Though you may look into who Feed the Children are as an organization, I feel it necessary to write about who they are anyway. They started their mission to feed children a little over 40 years ago. They work throughout the US to distribute food and much more to community partners. They also help internationally. In countries like Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Their reach isn’t just to partners giving out food. They also provide classroom items and help teachers with teaching supplies. The work in providing help during disaster relief. They do so much and for as long as they have been around they have helped a countless number of kids and teachers and communities to thrive where they need it most. Even military families. If you go to their website they have a 5-year plan as well. I like reading plans because it gives you such motivation to help meet that goal.

There are a lot of charities that I could mention. One being Covenant House which I see ads for every year. Geared to helping teens from all walks of life. I do want to encourage anyone to look into them as well. Since this reminds me of the young man I found that one day. He couldn’t have been older than 20 years of age.

This year, this time of year, give back. Go to my page and click on the button to donate. A minimum of $10 is all that they ask for. It’s up to you if you want to give more. Avon cares and I am so happy to be a part of a company as a representative that wants the best for everyone through any charity that we partner with. You never know who you might be helping. It could be that kid you’ve seen around town.

[2021 Update] 9 Espira Products by Avon Worth Your Best Health

[2021 Update] 9 Espira Products by Avon Worth Your Best Health

Updated for 2021 with more information to be added. Note that Espira is being rebranded to re:tune by Avon but I still want people to be able to find this blog post with the tag Espira especially since it’s been popular already this new year.

January 2, 2021 update: Our Espira line was rather popular and now it is being re-branded as ‘re:tune’ by Avon. It is part of our re-launch of the brand for beauty from the inside out. Many of the products are the same. There are a few new items. As for anything leaving, well, I will be honest in saying that as of now, I am now sure. But I will update this page ASAP. Because many reps are wanting to keep the protein and powdered greens. We also want the vitamins back. Keep an eye on this page for updates. Until then, you can still order the Espira products right now. New ones and rebranded ones will be available on January 6, 2021.

In 2018 Avon released a new health line called Espira. geared toward helping you be at your best every day. After all, Avon is now more than simply embracing your external beauty (initially it was financial independence). In an article by prnewswire.com Scott white Avon chief executive officer had a lot to say about the products when they came out such as, “We are very proud to enter this critical category with highly innovative high performing line of products that is unlike any other on the market today.” If you were wondering where the name of Espira came from, Betty palm president of social selling for Avon says, “The name is spirit derived from the words aspire and inspire – born out of a desire to help people feel and look their best. The inspiration for Espira came directly from our representatives as they lead busy lives as moms, nurtures, caregivers, volunteers, community members – and CEOs of their households and Avon businesses. Our goal is to develop products that would support them and their customers in living healthier and more productive lives.”

There are many benefits to living healthier and taking the time to do so. I realize that this is not easy for many. Though one small thing can make a big difference.

You could name off a list of ways that living healthier is a great thing, but I will stick with four.

  1. A Healthy Weight
  2. Better Sleep and Higher Energy
  3. Improved State of Mind
  4. Prevention of Disease and Injury

A few years ago, before I began selling Avon again, I decided to improve my own health. Much of it for personal reasons. I happen to be thin and have always been thin and I never liked being thin. There were and still are misconceptions about being thin. For one, I get asked if I have the body of a child and am sometimes mistaken for one. I already look 20 years younger than I am and no, that isn’t always a good thing. I am not even 50 yet. Being thin which doesn’t help matters. I have been asked if I have an eating disorder. No. I have never been diagnosed with an eating disorder, though for a time in high school I think depression may have been the root cause of my looking thin. I do have a fast metabolism that has slowly started to not be as fast since I hit 30. Also, I have a few other issues that have plagued my body and again, this never helped. The lowest I have ever been I think was 96 lbs. That was a LONG time ago. I had something going on that was never fully established but has since not been an issue. Three years ago, again going back to before I was a rep, I began a small journey to gain weight and be healthier. I was 112 at the time. And given my height, I was actually at the low end of a healthy weight. I gained 24 pounds in four months, roughly. I was very happy. Then I got busy with other things and that part of my health went to the wayside but I managed to maintain my weight for over two years. I once gained an extra 5 pounds because I had to take meds for the back issues I have. I get spasms so bad I can’t breathe or sleep laying down. I can’t move at all. It is not fun. Then two years ago I was told that for whatever reason, my back was going weak. Which I thought odd because in taking care of a special needs child 24/7 and lifting and bending and what have you, I used my back a lot! I went into physical therapy and began doing core exercises. Then college started just last year and my mind went elsewhere. I lost all the weight I had gained within a semester. Luckily my back hasn’t had trouble though my right hip has. Again, I decided to get back into it. But it took me until the beginning of April of this year to do it. I had planned to start the beginning of March. I couldn’t get back to the gym due to corona. That’s when I decided to use Daily Burn and use MyFitnessPal. I have always planned my monthly meals and prepped them every four days. In the last two months, I have gained 3 pounds. I told myself to take it slow because that way I can ensure I keep up the routine of being healthy. I have had trouble with sleep but I do have mixed insomnia. Luckily that has been going well. I also wanted to use some of Avon’s wellness products to get back on track and to let you, the customer, the reader, the curious to know about it. I know that being healthy can help with much of the matters I face on a regular basis.

The Espira line originally included vitamins for men, women, men and women over 50, and kids as well as an energy pack. All of which are no longer available. What products we still have are (some will be re-branded):

  • Espira am protect
  • Espira hunger pack
  • Espira hydration supplement
  • Espira ideal cleanse
  • Espira metabolism boost
  • Espira plant power protein (vanilla and chocolate flavored)
  • Espira power greens and
  • Espira restful sleep

Let’s look at each product a bit more closely.

  • AM Protect – this product helps with hair skin and nails water balance immunity UV exposure protection and eyesight using vitamins and minerals consisting of vitamin C niacin biotin calcium and sodium just to name a few. It also has a list of herbs in it two of which I would like to mention. One being horsetail which prevents edema (water retention) in lutein the eye vitamin that prevents vision loss and cataracts.
  • Hunger Block (now re:tune Hunger Block) – For those trying to cut back on how much they eat one of the best ways to do that is to fill full already. Fiber is one good ingredient in doing that. Fiber expands in the presence of liquids. Also, it takes longer to digest. The hunger pack has glucomannan and rice flour. Glucomannan is water-soluble and absorbs 50% of its weight. Each capsule has 1 gram of glucomannan along with other ingredients like rice flour. Directions say to take two capsules with eight ounces of water before a meal. It is best to stick with the recommended 8 ounces of water to prevent choking and also this helps with the absorption of water with the fiber. healthline.com has a wonderful bar graph, please click the link to see it, showing how effective this ingredient is in preventing hunger. Using three variants of glucomannan over a five-week trial.
  • Espira Hydration (Now re:tune Hydration, Berry Flavor Only)– Many of us don’t drink enough water. Then for many of us, we drink enough water but need electrolytes. Electrolytes can be thought to be most commonly used for two reasons: during workouts and when we are sick with vomiting and/or diarrhea. But to be honest we need them for regular functions as well. How much depends on our activity level or if we are sick. Espira hydration gives enough to use at least every day. It has electrolytes zinc vitamins B&C and antioxidants. The re-brand will only be in berry flavor as it was our most popular flavor.
  • Espira Ideal Cleanse (now re:tune Ideal Cleanse)– This cleanse is for three days and meant to aid in your digestive system and metabolism re-boost. Cleansing the system means removing anything that may disrupt the body’s ability to function properly. Loading and Constipation are two of the symptoms you may have before taking this. By removing toxins, you improve the digestive process. This is not a detox. Detox eliminates unhealthy foods only and a cleanse can do that along with help in curbing cravings I’m getting rid of other nasties at the body. Other benefits include an energy boost and an improved mental and emotional level of health. the am capsules have apple fiber dandelion and horsetail as well as antioxidants inflammation blood sugar control reducing cholesterol and blood pressure as well as promoting a healthy liver. I haven’t mentioned the benefits of horsetail in Espira AM protect. The PM capsules also have fiber but the kind that helps eliminate waste. Not to make you feel full. As well as calcium and magnesium and Aloe Vera powder which can help lower blood sugar and is a natural laxative.
  • Espira Metabolism Boost (Now re:tune Metabolsim Boost) – Many look for ways to boost their metabolism so that they can lose weight period two things are very good at doing that. Green tea and caffeine. Espira metabolism boost has both plus guaran (which has antioxidant properties such as caffeine, theobromine, tannins, saponins, and catechins), and cocoa beans.
Before and After
Metabolism Boost

Caffeine is well known to help give a boost in burning calories and adding a bit of oomph to energy in the morning. It does still help, and it can also blunt appetite by just a bit.

Green tea in an article entitled ‘7 Foods that Naturally Speed Up Your Metabolism‘ by Self (the magazine) shows that consuming green tea can burn 70 to 100 calories per day because of the effect of anti-oxidants to the tea and 24 ounces of green tea is said to help. This pill has 667 milligrams of green tea powder which is equal to 2 cups of tea and 190 milligrams of caffeine which is equal to 2 cups of caffeine per serving.

  • Espira Plant Protein – Many people Think meat when I think protein. But plants can have some protein as well. Espira protein has sources of protein from sprouted quinoa amaranth yellow peas and globe artichokes. Each serving is 21 grams of protein. It is only 120 calories per serving and provides all the essential amino acids as whey protein and has fruit enzymes that make it easy to digest. The product is free of the allergens: dairy, soy, peanuts and tree nuts, is gluten-free and vegan. I like it because it isn’t overly sweet and doesn’t have a weird bitter or bland taste to it as many other protein products can have. I have also tried other plant proteins that are rather grainy. This is not grainy at all and blends in well with any fluid. Even water. Water usually makes protein powder taste weird, but I like how this can go in a blender bottle and mix just fine. It can get a bit foamy in an actual blender. But that is okay with me.
  • Espira Power Greens – Not everyone likes veggies and though I enjoy them I may not eat as much as i should. Low in calories and so is this product. Greens and superfoods as well as vitamins and minerals that you come to expect in vegetables. There are a few fruits in there as well one of them being Apple. It also has dairy-free live probiotics. I can attest that this is helped my digestion a tremendous amount. It isn’t the best tasting, but I have found that it’s better and soymilk. I tried it in different fluids and recommend it mixed with soymilk. Unless you are allergic or unable to have that particular ingredient.
  • Espira Restful Sleep (now re:tune Restful Sleep)- Next time talking about how we don’t consume enough water or veggies we also have sleep issues. This supplement is a non-habit-forming period to help you relax it has melatonin hops chamomile and passionflower. I’d like to discuss passionflower for just a second. I feel it is a lesser-known supplement for nighttime rest period I happen to have several boxes of passionflower tea in my cupboard that my mom gave me I am slowly going through it.
before and after
Rebrand of Restful Sleep

Passionflower boosts gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in your brain and because of this, the brain starts to slow down and helps you relax and fall asleep. It helps with those racing thoughts at the end of the night.

  • Espira PM Restore – Just like with Espira AM Protect, the Espira PM Restore has ingredients meant to be beneficial to everything on the outside. it has antioxidants and Bioactive Collagen Peptides stimulate your body’s natural mechanism for building new collagen for younger, firmer, healthier-looking skin. I recently learned more about collagen peptides and while many take collagen to make their skin look younger, it has other benefits as well. great for skin hydration, skin elasticity, healthy joints and bones as well as good for your hair skin and nails. Your muscles and ligaments get benefits as well. Because as we age, our bodies produce less and less of its own collagen. Yes, we make collagen. At age 25 is when the amount begins to decline. Depending on our lifestyles, we may lose it quicker than others. Also, if you are looking to gainmore muscle mass, this can help. Now, don’t expect it to make you into Arnold Swarzennegger. It doesn’t work like that but in a study noted by PUB Med and found in an online article by healthline.com, “In one study, 27 frail men took 15 grams of collagen while participating in an exercise program daily for 12 weeks. Compared with men who exercised but did not take collagen, they gained significantly more muscle mass and strength“. Espira PM RRestore only has 2.5 grams of collagen so it may not be enough to build muscle mass. Though I suggest Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides. It has 20 grams of collagen per serving. A great addition to Avon’s Espira products if you are interested. I take it in my coffee each morning. Avon Espira Pm Restore is also a powder that you can mix into a liquid of your choice. I recommend anything similar to water.

Now, I normally take a chewable because I already take pill form of meds for other things and hate pills. Though this is crushable, I would also have to add it to a smoothie. But, I am generally in a rush and prefer chewables.

Re:tune Inner Beauty Collagen Booster

Now, this product I am interested in because I already take a collagen supplement by Vital Proteins that is vegan and I mix it into my coffee every morning. I started because I read about it helping my nails as I am trying to grow them out to help not pull out eyelashes (trichotillomania). Now, I don’t know how much collagen this has in it whereas I know how much is in my current brand. I do know that the older you get, the less you body makes of collagen. This is also why 20-year-olds look youthful with plump round faces. I have mentioned how young I look to people. This is not why I use it. But others want to supplement it for that reason, others for health benefits. Collagen has a lot more to it than benefiting your youthful looking skin. It can also help your joints and muscles. But it is best known for your skin. I promise to have a product review of this one.

Supports healthy collagen production for firmer-looking skin.

Salt of the Mouth, Light of the Smile

Salt of the Mouth, Light of the Smile

When Avon came out with a new toothpaste that has pink Himalayan sea salt in it, I was curious as to how that would work. For the most part, I knew salt to be something we add to food for flavoring, to help when we have a wound that needed cleaning, or for people who suffer from low blood pressure (salt helps raise blood pressure). Some people veer away from salt when they have health issues. I decided to give this toothpaste a try along with the cute toothbrush. First, let’s get into the many not diet uses so that you can better understand the many benefits and uses of salt.

History

Salt has been used since 6050BC. That is a long time to be using salt, and even I was shocked to find this out. It’s part of many cultures and civilizations. It is no shock that salt was used by the ancient Egyptians and Phoneticians. Both have contributed much to modern uses of many things. In fact, “salary” is derived from the word salt as it was once used as a currency. Salt, along with bread, is not unheard of as an offering to guests in many cultures as a gift of good luck. The phrase, “Not worth his salt” refers to slave trade in exchange for salt currency. I find that part a bit sad, to be honest.

Salt is used in various ways in religion. Buddhists toss salt over their shoulder after a funeral before entering a house so as to ward off evil spirits. I may have to start doing that. This gives way to using salt to keep out evil and we see this done in many movies involving occult practice. Though not all of the movie depictions are accurate. You can learn more about the extensive history of salt here.

Non Food Use

The fact that salt can be used in everyday items should come as no shock. Salt can be found in soaps, dish detergent, laundry detergent, and inn chemical applications. For sake of keep things beauty related, I will focus more on how salt is used in bath and body products.

In soap, salt helps balance out the softness/hardness of a soap bar. Depending on how you like it, of course. Salt is a disputed item in soap making. I personally cannot say whether or not it works. Though I can describe how it is supposed to work. Salt makes a soap harder while it cures. It helps heal the soap faster. It won’t make the soap like a brick, of course. That would depend on other ingredients in the soap.

If salt is used in soaps, whether we know it or not, unless we look at the label or make it ourselves, it is also used in salt scrubs for the bath. Salt gently exfoliates the skin and makes it feel soft. This I can attest to as my daughter seems to have issues with her skin needed to be scrubbed, but I worry about being too rough. So I make salt scrubs for her to keep her skin clean, soft, and not looking rough. Salt scrubs are more abrasive in comparison to sugar scrubs (obviously). So if you need a better clean, salt scrubs are the go-to. Salt pulls away irritants to the skin. A bit in the way it does if you have an infected hangnail. It doesn’t sting like a salt soak for a hangnail, of course. Unless you have cuts. Salt scrubs are great for relaxing muscles and are used in salt baths for that exact reason. I wouldn’t recommend this for delicate skin. Just a 411.

Salt in toothpaste can also be used to exfoliate the teeth. This may sound odd since your teeth don’t need to be soft. But they do need to be clean. Some people have a hard time getting certain spots on their teeth. There may be some build up from inadequate brushing and not seeing the dentist. Which is best for when you need a good cleaning. Colgate even mentions the benefits of using salt in your toothpaste. That is a good thing to know because if a brand such as them can boast about it, that means Avon’s new line is perfect for those wanting to take up on the benefits.

Avon Perioe Himalaya Pink Sea Salt Toothpaste

Avon’s new line has four products. Two in tubes, two inn pumps, and either flavored with a soft mint or floral. The new line is made with pink Himalayan sea salt and is chemically similar to regular table salt. It also has potassium, magnesium, and calcium along with several other trace minerals that give it it’s color. This is also why it tastes different. It is a natural mineral, unlike table salt, which is often refined to the max. Benefits of Perioe is that it has 2.9X as much toothpaste as the tube; it is vegan friendly and Fluoride-free. I can’t forget that it also has aloe vera in it. This line not only cleans your teeth, it helps whiten but not in the same way as regular whiteners, which I recommend asking a dentist about before using anyway as it isn’t always kind to whiten teeth if it may harm more then help. Unlike with this line that does it naturally.

My Review

I bought the floral mint tube and the Avon Perioe Himalaya Pink Salt Toothbrush in pink. I have happened to have several containers of other kinds of toothpaste that were given to me. I actually rarely ever buy toothpaste anymore, as I am always given some by someone who has too much. And now I have too much. laughs I really did want to try this toothpaste because I wanted to see how it would work. I get sensitive teeth due to not being able to brush as I should. I have a mouth that can’t seem to take to toothbrushes, and it’s hard to reach the back of my teeth, especially in the back inside molars. The right side of my mouth seems more resistant to toothpaste and a toothbrush taking of plaque. It is not a surprise when I go into the dentist every six months for a cleaning to get that side cleaned. I just have trouble on that side.

The tooth brush is a nice size for me. Not too big and shaped well enough to reach difficult places. It’s soft and doesn’t hurt either.

After brushing with AquaFresh and my pink Avon toothbrush. I still had some reside on my front teeth as well as on the back of those front teeth.
My teeth didn’t have any residue on them after using this. They were also shinier and in the picture, much whiter.

The toothpaste was a weird flavor at first. I wasn’t sure what to think. I am very used to the commercial flavoring of mint toothpaste. I had a slight sudsing of the toothpaste, which, for the most part, felt like soft bubbles. It seems like a weird description. But they indeed felt soft. After several uses, I grew to like the flavor and find other toothpaste a bit strong in flavor. My teeth really did get clean. The spaces between my teeth were cleaner than I am used to without having to use floss. Which I use anyway but unflavored now that I like the taste of Avon’s sea salt toothpaste. What I liked most was that I had no aftertaste. I find that toothpaste leaves an aftertaste, and if I ever want to grab a bite after brushing my teeth, I can’t because the flavor of the toothpaste ruins my ability to taste the food. With Avon’s sea salt toothpaste, I get no aftertaste. I can eat 15 minutes afterward if I wanted to and still be able to taste my food and not mint.

The tooth pastes are $10 per pump (reg $12), $5 per pump (reg $6), and the toothbrushes are $4 (reg $5) right now.
