Be Your Own Choo-Choo: Getting New Customers as an Avon Rep

With all those catalogs/brochures you get as a rep, it can be a wonder as to where to hand them out at to gain new customers. There is no end as to where you can leave them out for sales.

Many new representatives ask how they can get new customers. When you start as a new representative, you start not knowing much about direct sales or how to find customers. It’s okay to feel a bit perplexed. After all, it is a skill you build. Though if you have worked in retail, then you might have a leg up. My retail experience extends mostly to nutrition. Working at a few nutrition stores as well as being what they called an events specialist for food demonstration. AKA, “Hi would you like to try this new flavor of chips/creamer/bubble gum?” You name it, I pitched it to customers as they walked into the store. I loved that job at a first. Then quickly didn’t. Granted, I sent out samples of food. But sometimes I did the same thing repeatedly. Still, it did give me more confidence to talk to random people (I am an introvert). Even if I felt like Jackie trying to hand out samples of cheese on ‘That 70s Show’. Only, the difference being that I don’t think I am above working a regular job (Jackie). My circumstances are different (not rich or formerly rich or cut off from being rich or unwilling to work for what I need or want). I just feel odd talking to people randomly. Jackie only doesn’t talk to people when she doesn’t like them. Though I really do think she would have loved selling makeup to people as an Avon representative.

Avon can be much the same as selling something to a random person sometimes, but you get better as you go along. I want to start with where to leave catalogs/brochures. As a precursor, I recommend that you ask personnel if it is okay to leave these at some places as they may not allow it. For example, I am not allowed to advertise in the exact area that I live in. I can discuss it in general with neighbors, but I cannot leave out the brochures in public areas where other neighbors might gather at. I hear you can leave them at doctors’ offices, yet at only one of the places that I do go to for any medical treatment, can I do that. One. Other than that, I leave them at a local cafe where many others leave an array of advertisements for different businesses and occasionally at the laundry mat where they have washers better suited for some of the gigantic blankets that I have. There is also the issue of having to be licensed to go door-to-door here in Idaho. It’s to protect the customer from fraud and schemes. So, check with your state regulations as well. How do can you advertise, then? Mostly by word of mouth or via social media. I used to go door to door before the lights licensing happened. Still, if you are more able to leave catalogs at other establishments do it. But don’t do it where another representative already leaves out brochures. I find it a bit rude. They may already have an established customer base at that location.

Leaving Out Catalogs

If you are at a loss as to where to leave brochures, I can suggest a few places.

  • The tax preparation office – I do my own taxes period but from time to time I go there for extra help and it helps to make it look as if you are looking at a brochure already and then set it down when your name is called. As if you had already found it there or that you may have forgotten to pick it back up when you got up to attend your appointment. Whatever works for you.
  • The pharmacy – My pharmacy is at a local grocery store but, sometimes when I am getting advice and have to step to the side into the little waiting area, I can easily slip one of the brochures on the end table.
  • The bank – I get sneaky with this one. I’ll pull one out and then set it down as if I needed to pick up my purse and then attend to my little meeting with whatever bank personnel I am meeting with and forgot it.
  • The laundromat – This one I am more able to be bold enough to leave two to three out at a single visit.
  • The WIC office – It’s been years since I needed to use WIC but, there are times, I had to wait my turn for an appointment or for a checkup on how I’m doing. It wasn’t too hard to leave one at that location.
  • The bowling alley – I may go bowling only during the summer but it’s easy to leave one without making it seem obvious that you’re leaving one.
  • College campus – Many representatives are college students (I am an older student currently). But I still like to ask if I’m allowed to leave one there anyway just since case one of the staff says I can’t.
  • Daycare center – Again it’s been years, but I always asked if it was okay the owner may not like people advertising at their own business, but it does help to ask just in case. Maybe you’re on good terms.
  • The dressing room – Another great way to be sneaky about leaving brochures. It’s not like anybody’s going to notice that you’re the one who did it. Plus, it’s not too hard to figure that maybe you were waiting for someone to put back an item or bring out another item that was of a different color or size while you’re waiting in the dressing room to try that item on.
  • Hair salon – I have made it seem as if I accidentally forgot mine there only because most hair salons are trying to push their products to make sales but, if you feel that you need to ask, it doesn’t hurt to do so. Maybe it might be a private salon or a friend that you know personally that wouldn’t mind having you leave I brochure there.
  • The Gym – It depends on where you go gym wise. You could easily leave one in the cubby or locker that you used. But if you want to leave one upfront again, I suggest that you ask the personnel or owner of the establishment.
  • In the back of a taxi – It’s easy to figure that someone might leave something in the back of a taxi. Unless it’s a local taxi and they know you then I would just recommend asking them if you can leave some for customers. This is something I do on occasion as I don’t use the taxis often as I used to.
  • The dry cleaners – I haven’t had too much experience with this one but maybe there’s a waiting area that you could lay one out at.
  • Coffee shop or cafe – I had mentioned before that there is this little coffee place that I go to that has an array of other advertisements for businesses and such. I usually just go up to the owners and ask if there’s enough room for me to leave one there. It’s also a great place to set up Flyers if they have a board that you can set up Flyers at 4 special promotions or fundraisers.
  • Shopping carts – Have you noticed that a lot of people leave things in shopping carts? I once accidentally forgot my phone because I set it down in this little cubby thing while I was shopping and then when I got to the register, I completely forgot that it was there instead of putting it back in my purse. People can leave some pretty interesting things in carts. So why not a brochure?


During the year of 2020, in case you happen to read this at a later date as a new rep, getting the chance to get our and leave brochures may be a bit hard. You may not get to go to that great spot to leave a brochure. or that waiting area is blocked off. Or the establishment closed. Some potential customers may be hesitant to pick up a brochure. In their mind, they have no idea how long that catalog has been there, and if whoever left it handled it in a way that would make them feel comfortable. I have done a lot more advertising via social media because of this and though I did leave a brochure or two at the local laundromat earlier today, I have been handing out brochures to current customers while wearing gloves.

Person-to-Person Sales

Another great way to get customers is to start with people you already know. When I first started as a representative a bit over 13 years ago (the first time around), I worked a regular part-time job. This gave me a pathway to handout catalogs to coworkers. I traveled a bit more back then and was able to meet up with family and sometimes family took the brochures to work and I got leads with their coworkers. Friends, coworkers, and family are the best first option. Next to leaving brochures. After that, it is using other forms of advertisement to reach potential customers. Get creative about it. I plan on getting a shirt that lets people know I am an Avon lady for when I go out to places. I may be unable to do this for a while. Normally, this would be the grocery store, but for a few months now, since January actually, I have been picking up groceries. Then as of this summer, I can have them delivered. Leaving me less of a chance to walk around with an Avon shirt. Get a sticker for your computer and car. If you live in an area where it is allowed (unlike me), put a sign in your window. Turn your garage into a tiny store. If you are wondering if you can have a physical store, Avon no longer allows this but that is not to say that there aren’t any to be found. There is a representative in Florida who had the chance to open one up long before Avon made this a no-option. But you can open a booth at open-air events. Be sure to get permission first from Avon. There is a process for this, and I hope to do it next year. I would have this year, but the world happened. The event is still going on, but I would rather stay safe just in case. Throw an online party or, if you can, an in-person party. Give out prizes. Like the lip balm sticks or whatever you feel would work. Start a fundraiser. I did one for the Ronald McDonald House in Boise. It was a small fundraiser, but I still did it. My son wanted to help kids in need, and it is still something he likes doing.
And don’t forget to give any customers you get a gift for being your customer. I like to give a gift to customers who spend a certain amount or little paper coupons for referring people. Avon now has the option to let you create a discount offer to already established customers. I will have to write a post on that at a later date. It is a new feature we have, and it’s got all the representatives happy that they can do it now. It used to be you had to be a certain level in sales to get that.

Selling on Social Media

Fun Fact: Sometimes when you go on vacation you manage to gain new customers and sales. Don’t ask me why this happens. It just does. Once, I went to visit my dad. I handed my stepmother a few brochures as she had asked to have a few to set out in the break room at work. That very same night she came home with several orders that had totaled to just over $400. Back then we had the chance of getting a 50% commission. Not as high now but I sat there in shock. I hadn’t done very much and still came out with more than I expected in sales. I recall that one customer’s name was Cinnamon. Not sure if that was just for work or if it was her actual name. Either way, it was a name that stuck in my memory 17-18 years later.
If you aren’t sure about doing things person-to-person, then leaving brochures and doing online stuff may be a better fit for you. Just to note that doing it online is something to always work at. It can take time. Think about it, we as being who is now always on our devices, see ads all the time. I think only once did an ad on Facebook for a product I ended up buying for my oldest as a Christmas gift is the one time an ad worked for me. Even commercials are not something I am persuaded with. Sure, some are comical and witty. I think at most the Pine-Sol lady was able to get me into that product and she still promotes it! That and Orlando Jones as the “Make 7-Up Yours” guy. I miss those commercials. Besides only a hand full of commercials, I think I ignore most. I tend to mute the TV when I see them. I would rather watch the show thanks. Kids though, they see it they may want it. That is why when you do online marketing for an Avon product to not feel as if it is defeating you. It takes work. Next to posting products, you have to actively engage with people. Put up something to make them laugh or something they can respond to. My page has new followers (42 currently) but I do get a few likes and sometimes comments. It’s been up for a year. It takes time to get a following and more engagement. Keep it to the 80/20 rule. For every two Avon posts, you make, have 80% of the other posts be about something else. I like to post about my crochet, my cat being cute, about things I care about. Last night I posted a link to an article about Robin William’s daughter donating to homeless shelters in his name as it was something, he did every year in Seattle. Not only is it about a generous act that is carried on after William’s death, but it also hits close to home for me. I have been homeless before and donations to people who are in a hard position mean a lot to me as someone who has experienced it before. Which brings me to another idea, you can do a fundraiser for causes closest to you. Makes care bundles for the homeless during the fundraiser and then use a portion of the sales customers have to add even more to the whole deal. Don’t forget to post about it. It is a great way for others to know that Avon is all for helping others. It is one of the causes I plan on doing this coming fall in light of the new school year. I knew a lot of kids at the shelters with their moms.
There is no end as to how you can get optional customers.
