I have known people who suffer from dry skin. Some worse than others. One is my mother who is always on the lookout for new products for her hands because that is where most of her dry skin is. It’s so dry that her hands sometimes hurt. She doesn’t like anything too oily and it needs to be absorbed into the skin quickly while lasting a good chunk of the day. I have a little bit of dry skin on my shins and don’t need anything too moisturizing. I like Avon’s CBD body lotion. It does the job and keeps my legs feeling less itchy.
Symptoms of Dry Skin
Dry skin is an uncomfortable condition many of us face and for varying reasons. Maybe someone does dishes at a local restaurant and their hands are always in water and around chemicals. Maybe during this pandemic someone is using the sanitizer just a tad too much and it’s drying out their skin. It could be a medical condition. Perhaps a side affect of some medication. Diuretics and cholesterol medication can dry out the skin. Either way, most of use who have any level of dry skin aren’t using enough moisturizing lotion or maybe not the right kind of lotion for our needs. Don’t feel bad if you fall into either category of non-use or not-the-right-lotion. I don’t judge you for it. It happens. Maybe you can’t afford the lotion you want right now or gave up trying to find the right lotion and went sans lotion.
The cons of dry skin are more than just being dry. Occasional dry skin is harmless. Season dry skin happens and more often than not expected in winter because there isn’t as much moisture in the air. As mentioned, other reasons for dry skin can be due to age, hormones, medical conditions, medications, laundry detergents, and also your environment. The ph level of our skin affects the moisture. Dry skin can appear in more than one way. Such as:
- A feeling of skin tightness, especially after showering, bathing or swimming (I get this all the time with my skins and it is why I use lotion RIGHT after the shower to help keep in moisture)
- Skin that feels and looks rough
- Itching (pruritus) [Again I get this on my shins but also my scalp as I have a dry scalp and oily hair, the combination is rather annoying]
- Slight to severe flaking, scaling or peeling
- Fine lines or cracks
- Gray, ashy skin
- Deep cracks that may bleed
If you have had ongoing issues and not a single lotion has helped, I recommend that you see a doctor. There may be something going on that you aren’t aware of. My youngest daughter was born with eczema and had to have a prescription for a short while. It helped and now she just needs oatmeal lotion for her dermatitis.
Your age plays in when you are age 40 and older and it can get worse from there on out. Another reason to see the doctor when you feel an appointment is needed if no lotion seems to help, despite your best efforts. Especially when cracks in dry skin are an entryway for bacteria and infections.
Let’s talk about something you may not know. Your microbiome. On and in our body are tiny organisms that help maintain our bodily function. On the skin, there is a colony of these organisms. Don’t worry. It’s totally normal. It is still somewhat new territory to researchers but they do tell us that these organisms play a role in skin health just as the microorganisms in our gut play a role in our guts health. Hence why we have probiotics (adding to the body good bacteria) and prebiotics (feeding the body good bacteria) to maintain bodily function and yogurt to eat. Mmm yogurt. Yogurt can have varying levels of bacteria needed for the gut and how much you need can vary from person to person. The same goes for each person’s skin. According to dsm.com, there are documented to be over 200 different species of bacteria. Whatis interesting about all the microorganisms on our body, something I barely found out as of today, is that it plays into 3% of our total body weight! So for me, I think that is roughly a pound of my weight. Taking the idea of when we shed 9 lbs of skin each year to a whole new level. Also, I am now thinking of the movie Gatica differently, too. I wonder if he lost more skin cells with all that scrubbing each day.
Why Pro and Pre-biotics?
I mentioned yogurt for your gut to help balance the good bacteria inside and thus balancing how your body functions. This can be applied to the skin as well and our new line has this in the product. Prebiotics, with adequate formulation techniques, can be used, with more stability, in cosmetics.

- Close the bathroom door, it keeps in the moisture (unless there’s a reason you need it open)
- Limit your time in the shower or bath to 5 or 10 minutes (you also use less water and lower your eco-footprint and cost of heating)
- Use warm rather than hot water (hot water dries out the skin and can also damage it in the long run)
- Wash with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser
- Apply enough cleanser to remove dirt and oil, but avoid using too much (buildup is no fun)
- Blot your skin gently dry with a towel (I even have trouble to rubbing)
- Slather on the moisturizer immediately after drying your skin
- Wear gloves when doing housework. (cleaning products can damage and dry out the skin, making matters worse and also protects your hands from the elements during the winter)
- Hypoallergenic detergent (unless there is a brand your allergic too then find what is best)
- Use a humidifier (cold in the summer and warm in the winter, good for your nasal passages, icky coughs, and dry skin)
An extra benefit is that moisturized skin can hold in yummy perfumes and fragrances better. Unless you can’t do that, then you may skip this part. These products will be available July 22, 2020.
